Lakshadweep islands lie about 220 to 440 kms off the Kerala coast between 8° and 12° North Latitudes and 71° and 74° East Longitudes. The islands are connected to mainland by passenger ships and flights operated from Kochi.

The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS) is a society formed by the Lakshadweep Administration in 1982 with the avowed aim of tapping tourism potential of the islands and to act as the nodal agency of Lakshadweep Administration for promotion of tourism in the islands. It is registered under Section 3 of the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Hon’ble Administrator, Lakshadweep is the Chairman of the Society and Shri. J.K.DADOO IAS is the Chairman at present. Under him Managing Director discharges the functions of Chief Executive Officer.

The primary aim of the organization is to promote eco-friendly tourism and recreational activities in the islands in association with and under guidance of the Lakshadweep Administration. SPORTS also acts as hospitality and catering wing of the Lakshadweep Administration. The Society operates tourist resorts at Kadmat, Minicoy and Kavaratti. It also conducts package tour covering three islands - Minicoy, Kalpeni and Kavaratti. Apart from operating these resorts SPORTS is manning State Guest House and Dak Bungalows of the Administration. SPORTS also strives to provide employment opportunities to the educated locals the tourism sector.

The holiday packages drawn up by SPORTS, while providing the tourist with a memorable experience, protect the environment and do not upset the delicate balance between man and nature. In recognition of the Lakshadweep Administration’s policy and the projects of the SPORTS that helped to preserve the ecology of the island and create environmental awareness while promoting tourism, SPORTS has been awarded the 'most eco-friendly organisation' award of the Union Ministry of Tourism for the year 1996-97. Due to dedicated efforts of the SPORTS Lakshadweep islands have gained popularity as a unique tourist destination and as a haven for nature lovers. SPORTS is gearing up to diversify in to what can be termed as fishery tourism wherein marine and fishery resources around the islands will be woven in to tourism. Rich secular and cultural heritage of the islands rarely seen elsewhere in the country will also be promoted.
