The
Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS) is a
society registered under the Societies Act of 1860. The main aim of
the organization is to promote eco-friendly tourism and recreational
activities in the islands in collaboration with the Lakshadweep
Administration. SPORTS also strives to provide employment
opportunities to the educated local population in the tourism sector.
Since these islands are considered an important ecological asset in
terms of biodiversity of marine life and pollution-free environment,
economic growth of the islands is linked to the service industry. The
holiday packages drawn up by SPORTS, while providing the tourist with
a memorable experience, protect the environment and do not upset the
delicate balance between man and nature. SPORTS has won the 'most
eco-friendly organisation' award of the Union Ministry of Tourism for
the year 1996-97. The award was in recognition of the administration's
policies and projects that helped preserve the ecology of the
Lakshadweep islands and creating an environmental awareness while
promoting tourism.

Lakshadweep
islands have gained popularity as a unique tourist destination and a
paradise for naturalists. SPORTS has been promoting organized tourism
to the islands to provide tourists with an unforgettable experience in
eco-tourism. Lakshadweep is the tiniest Union Territory of India and
is its only coral island chain. This archipelago consists of 36
islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. The islands have a
total area of 32 sq.kms and the lagoons enclosed by the atolls cover
an area of 4200 sq.kms. With territorial waters extending to 20,000
sq.kms and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 4,00,000 sq.kms, this
island territory in the Arabian Sea is an important asset. Only 10 of
these islands are inhabited, namely
Agatti,
Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat,
Kadmat,
Kalpeni,
Kavaratti,
Kiltan and
Minicoy.
Kavaratti
is the Administrative Headquarters of the Union Territory. Permits
from the Administration are required to visit the islands. For tourism
packages organized by SPORTS, no special permission is required.
