The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS) is a society registered under the Societies Act of 1860. The main aim of the organization is to promote eco-friendly tourism and recreational activities in the islands in collaboration with the Lakshadweep Administration. SPORTS also strives to provide employment opportunities to the educated local population in the tourism sector. Since these islands are considered an important ecological asset in terms of biodiversity of marine life and pollution-free environment, economic growth of the islands is linked to the service industry. The holiday packages drawn up by SPORTS, while providing the tourist with a memorable experience, protect the environment and do not upset the delicate balance between man and nature. SPORTS has won the 'most eco-friendly organisation' award of the Union Ministry of Tourism for the year 1996-97. The award was in recognition of the administration's policies and projects that helped preserve the ecology of the Lakshadweep islands and creating an environmental awareness while promoting tourism.

Lakshadweep islands have gained popularity as a unique tourist destination and a paradise for naturalists. SPORTS has been promoting organized tourism to the islands to provide tourists with an unforgettable experience in eco-tourism. Lakshadweep is the tiniest Union Territory of India and is its only coral island chain. This archipelago consists of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. The islands have a total area of 32 sq.kms and the lagoons enclosed by the atolls cover an area of 4200 sq.kms. With territorial waters extending to 20,000 sq.kms and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 4,00,000 sq.kms, this island territory in the Arabian Sea is an important asset. Only 10 of these islands are inhabited, namely Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy. Kavaratti is the Administrative Headquarters of the Union Territory. Permits from the Administration are required to visit the islands. For tourism packages organized by SPORTS, no special permission is required.

Lakshadweep islands lie about 220 to 440 kms from the Kerala coast between 8° and 12° North Latitudes and 71° and 74° East Longitudes. The islands can be reached by flights and passenger ship service from Cochin. The airport is in Agatti and facilities exist for helicopter transfer to Kavaratti Island. The remoteness and pristine beauty of these islands combined with the solitude and peace provided by the verdant environment offer an ideal getaway for holidaymakers.

Lakshadweep enjoys a tropical climate with summer temperatures ranging from 22° C to 33° C and winter temperatures from 20° C to 32° C. Southwest monsoons from June to September bring plenty of rainfall to the islands. Northeast monsoons also result in some rains during October and November. Light cotton tropical clothes are sufficient throughout the year. A waterproof coat will come in handy during the monsoons. Cool sea breeze and the abundant shade bestowed by the canopy of coconut palms make the climate pleasant even during peak summer.

All the resorts in Lakshadweep are open throughout the year. However the period from October to May is ideal and popular with tourists. Islands like Agatti and Bangaram are pleasant even during the monsoon period since the rainfall is scanty. During monsoons, transport from Agatti to Bangaram is only by helicopter ferry. All lagoons remain placid and calm even during monsoon period. The rainy season presents a breathtaking experience when the vegetation looks greener than ever and the veil of rain adds a different dimension to the beauty of lagoons and the blue seas beyond. Flights and ship services operate all round the year.
